Who gave Jesus the authority to preach and teach the things that he did? The answer seems pretty obvious to us, doesn’t it? However, the religious leaders respond: “I don’t know.”
The Jewish leaders appeared to be more concerned with their reputation and what other’s thought of them, instead of being honest in God’s truth. Many times we struggle with how we are viewed based on man’s qualifications and not on God’s qualifications. Ironically, as I read this scripture and thought about what I would say, many thoughts entered my head (Will this sound ridiculous? Can I even write devotion? Will I interpret it correctly?) All of these thoughts are reflective of worrying about how other’s think of me, not necessarily what is pleasing to God. It is important for all of us to take the time to listen, wait for the right words, let God be our guide and leave it in His hands.
Dear Lord, please help us to seek your truth in all that we say and do so that it may be pleasing to you. Help us all to focus on truth and not the opinions of others. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
