As I read this passage I couldn’t help but think about how God selects some of the most unique individuals to help spread his message. No one could say that John was part of the “in crowd”, yet he was chosen by God to prepare the way for the Lord and he was very effective. Many flocked to listen to him and submitted to his baptism.
But why was he so effective? He was a man who lived his message. Not only in words, but his life was a protest to the normal way of living. He lived in the wilderness, wore clothes made of camel hair and ate a diet of locust and honey. He was humble and he asked for nothing for himself but everything for Christ whom he proclaimed. He compelled people to listen. He told them what in their heart of hearts they knew and brought them to what their souls were longing.
Can we learn from John when we “bring Jesus” to those we meet each day?
Help us to prepare the way for your Son. Remind us that we may be the only “Jesus” those around us may know. In your name we pray. Amen
